Breeders in Slovakia: Yes

Akita inu is the most frequently owned original Japanese dog breed in Slovakia . It has become really popular in the last decade, mainly because of a movie presenting the legendary tale of faithful Hachiko. While movie created in 2009 in Hollywood is well known all over the world, it is in general less known that the original Japanese version had been created more than 20 years before that, in 1987. For some, Hachiko Monogatari tells the story even in a more interesting way.

Except physical sturdiness and power, Akita is known for its independent and individualistic thinking and a need of being close to its beloved family , where the clear rules are set and followed.

This strong dog is happy when it is close to its human pack, most of the days they usually spend quietly laying on the ground in the room with their family. As with all the large breeds, also with Akita it is crucial to pay attention to proper exercise, so that bones, muscles, ligaments and joints develop properly until the dog reaches adulthood. In puppy age (that is a dog being < 1 year old), too much activity can seriously do more harm then good.

Similarly as other Japanese dogs, Akita prefers colder climates and thanks to thick undercoat does not have any problem to live outside even during freezing winter nights. Well maintained coat and a dry place keeping the dog away from the wind is usually a sufficient protection from the outside conditions.
